Good Practice Guidelines for the Development and Reporting of Indicators: July 2009 (pdf 200kb)
Statistics New Zealand good practice guidance providing those involved in indicator work with a set of tools, and advice to assist with the development and reporting of indicators. The guidelines are focused on the development of outcome indicators in the social domains but may also be applied to other domains (www.statisphere.govt.nz).
Statistics New Zealand is New Zealand’s major source of official statistics. Many of the information and products produced by Statistics New Zealand can be used in community outcomes processes.
Statistics New Zealand - Regional Stocktake
A comprehensive list of sub-nationally available central government datasets and supporting information. Produced by Statistics New Zealand and The Department of Internal Affairs to support community outcomes monitoring. It should be used as a first port of call for any potential user of sub-national information, from local and central government to independent researchers.
The regional indicators report is published in conjunction with the Social Report, and uses similar data at a regional and local level to show how outcomes vary across the country. It is intended to support regional and local councils with decision making.
MARCO - Core Set of Indicators for Community Outcomes
MARCO, a group of strategic planners in the Waikato Region, has developed this core set of community outcomes indicators as part of a Monitoring and Reporting Community Outcomes Resource Kit.

The Regional Industry Snapshot Tool is an interactive tool developed by the Department of Labour. State of the Environment Report from the Ministry for the Environment.
“It takes the pulse of the physical well-being of New Zealand’s land, water, air, plants and animals and measures the impact of transport, energy, waste, and our consumption on the environment. It introduces benchmark environmental indicators as well as 80 specific measures, to capture hard data which will be used to build up a clear picture of trends and pressures over time.
This report is a ‘one stop shop’ of accessible, relevant environmental information which can be used as a basis for decision-making”.

Environmental Report Cards are produced by the Ministry for the Environment, to provide national updates on the Ministry's 5-yearly State of the Environment Report . These report cards ensure high-quality environmental information is available in the interim between State of the Environment Reports. These web-based reports are designed for a wide readership, and will be published on a regular basis (in some cases, annually) as new data becomes available.

Quality Planning Website - Monitoring and Reporting One-Stop-Shop
The Quality Planning website aims to promote best practice by sharing knowledge about all aspects of practice under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). Information on environmental monitoring and reporting under the RMA, the Local Government Act 2002 and other relevant legislation, including
- introductory information on the benefits of monitoring
- the monitoring process and monitoring requirements
- information on the benefits of adopting an integrated (or coordinated) approach to monitoring
- examples, resources and lessons learnt to date.

Proving It – Sustainable Economic Development
A web-based resource developed by the Economic Development Agency of New Zealand, offering a step by step guide to the monitoring and evaluation process, a suite of best value economic indicators, background information relating to sustainable economic development and a number of tools for planning and monitoring economic growth.
Outcome Mapping is methodology for assessing outcomes. It measures changes in the behaviours, relationships, actions or activities of the people, groups and organisations with which a development programme works directly. It is a shift away from assessing the developmental impact (i.e. changes in state) of a programme. Outcome Mapping does not belittle the importance of changes in state (such as cleaner water or a stronger economy), but argues that for each change in state there are correlating changes in behaviour.
